How to Pack Your Mountain Bike for Air Travel

WHAT DO YOU NEED:

  1. Tape
  2. Bike Case (Box, Bike Bag)
  3. Zip Ties
  4. Rags
  5. Foam/Bubble Wrap
  6. Beer (Option­al, but high­ly recommended)

TOOLS:

  1. Mul­ti-Tool or set of Allen Key
  2. Ped­al Wrench ( to remove your pedals)

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Remove your back wheel
  2. Remove your dérailleur
  3. Wrap the derail­luer in bub­ble wrap or foam
  4. Remove your ped­als — remem­ber be sure to turn the ped­al wrench or allen key in the prop­er direction
  5. Place the rear wheel in the box or bike bag
  6. Pri­or to remov­ing the front wheel, secure the through axel/quick release of your rear wheel back to the frame
  7. Remove the front wheel
  8. Deflate your tires
  9. Use card­board to pre­vent your disc brake pads from touch­ing  each other
  10. Gath­er excess chain and zip tie it to the frame of the bike to avoid scratching
  11. Stay hydrat­ed — have a sip of beer
  12. Use bub­ble wrap or foam to pro­tect the bike
  13. Put the bike in the box or bag
  14. Remove seat post and handlebars
  15. Using zip ties, attach the han­dle­bars to the frame
